At Mission Dolores is a self-professed psychedelic pop/yacht rock band based out of Kamloops, but this is definitely not your dad's yacht rock. The band was born in late 2015 when JP Lancaster began recording songs for what would become At Mission Dolores' debut self-titled EP. He recorded much of the instruments himself and enlisted the help of local musicians to fill in the rest. And fill in they did, there is some gorgeous layered aural richness going on here.
The mantra I subscribe to is 'it's not how weird you make it, it's how you make it weird'. I want to make popular music that is slightly off kilter, or has some subtle strangeness to it.
– JP Lancaster
Two of those musicians, guitarist and vocalist Jared Doherty and drummer Jared Wilman, ended up becoming permanent fixtures. Bassist Stuart McCallum and keyboardist Maggie Ollek filled out the group shortly after. In two years At Mission Dolores has released two EPs (S/T -2016, Hideous Fiends - 2017) and two singles ("Still Life" - 2017, "Full of Life" - 2017). This has garnered them positive reviews from indie music blogs, features on podcasts and playlists, and nation-wide rotation on college radio stations.
The band is currently preparing to record their debut full-length album (at the NoiseFloor studio on Gabriola Island). About their sound, Lancaster says "the mantra I subscribe to is 'it's not how weird you make it, it's how you make it weird'. I want to make popular music that is slightly off kilter, or has some subtle strangeness to it". They do this by "incorporating a lot of concepts from jazz music; the use of dissonance, odd time signatures, jazz chords and phrases. I think it makes a very interesting experience for the listener when you combine those elements with an approachable melody and vocal line."
Post-Modern Connection definitely likes to mix it up. Their music constantly pushes the boundaries of various musical genres and finds fruit in their cross-pollination, moreover the band's international composition is also reflected in their unique sound – one that draws inspiration from a wide variety of artists including Hippocampus, Alabama Shakes, Fela Kuti, and James Vincent McMorrow. They are currently working on their debut EP Clustered Umbrella, and have just released a music video for their song "Memories". Check it out to see what we mean!
