An upcoming lecture at the Kelowna Art Gallery sees Mary Smith McCulloch, Professor Emeritus at UBCO, whose work has been exhibited widely in Canada and in the UK, discussing her reasons for investigating and exploring the relationship of recurrent motifs that are present “when man intersects with the land”. The lecture is held in conjunction with the KAG’s current exhibition “Through Her Eyes: Works from Our Permanent Collection” featuring several of McCulloch’s pieces.
McCulloch was born in Ardrishaig, Argyll, Scotland and attended the Glasgow School of Art majoring in printmaking, and in 1967 she immigrated to Canada where she began teaching at Okanagan College. She set up the printmaking program there, and until her retirement in May 2000 she was a professor of Fine Arts at Okanagan University College. McCulloch has participated in numerous printmaking biennial and triennial exhibitions in the former Yugoslavia, the Netherlands, India, Slovenia, Poland, and Germany, and maintains a printmaking studio in Kelowna, near the lake.
The “Through Her Eyes” exhibition examines and highlights the particular perspectives and sensibilities that women artists bring to landscape, includes works ranging from the 1930s to the present.
The lecture takes place on November 14th, from 6pm to 7pm, and is open to the public.
